How long will your archived photos, music, movies, etc. last on an archival gold CD-R or DVD-R disc? Until recently most manufacturers said about 300 years for the gold CD-R and 100+ years for DVD-R and DVD+R discs. MAM-A recently released new test results that show even longer lifetime stability: 329 years for MAM-A Gold Archive CD-R and 116 years for their Gold Archive DVD-R.

Compatibility can be an issue if your firmware is not up-to-data; MAM-A provides a link on their site with Firmware upgrade information and links.   

I thought this story was worth mentioning: A team in Germany has developed a way to put up to 500GB of data on a blu-ray or HD DVD disc.

Currently the largest capacity on the market is a 50GB blu-ray disc (write-once or rewritable). It looks like they are working on a 1TB capacity disc that should be available by 2010. Check out the full story at vnunet.com.
