The Best Headset Choices for WIDA Testing

In the past years, states across the nation have begun implementing the WIDA assessment program. WIDA develops proficiency standards and assessments for English-language learners throughout the country and has also developed the same for Spanish-language learners. Since its beginning in Wisconsin, Delaware, and Arkansas, WIDA is now used by school districts in 37 states. With WIDA, schools determine a student’s level of English when entering a school and can then place them in the correct language learning class level.

WIDA includes both listening and speaking exercises and gives recommendations for what sort of headsets will work best with the test. WIDA suggests using over-ear headphone-style headsets with microphones and stereo sound, instead of earbud-style. Lighter styles with smaller earpieces work well for younger students, while heavy-duty earpieces that sit over the entire ear are good for noise reduction and help students focus on their test exercises. Boom microphones work much better than inline microphones since they capture sound better than inline mics, which sit farther from students’ mouths. Fabric-covered cords will prevent tangling and are much more durable than rubber-covered styles. Finally, WIDA recommends having inline volume control. Since the volume cannot be adjusted once the testing software is in use, the inline volume control allows students to set the headphone volume to a comfortable level before the test begins.

While WIDA does not require any specific brand of the headset, they do have a few that they recommend. Here are three of the most popular styles among our customers for use in their WIDA testing:

  1. Hamilton Buhl Trios: The Trios headset comes equipped with both dual plugs and the TRRS plug, so it is convertible between different devices like desktops, laptops, and tablets. This makes them a great investment for school computer labs: Hamilton’s products are well-built, reliable, and can be used for a variety of applications outside of standardized testing. The Trios has a large, over-ear headphone design to help block outside noise and keep students on task.
  • AVID Education SMB-25VC: These headsets are another large over-ear design, and are heavily padded for maximum comfort. The large boom microphone can swivel up out of the way and is also adjustable to sit closer or farther from the student’s mouth so each student can achieve the perfect fit. These come with a dual plug, making them a good choice for testing environments utilizing desktop computers.
  • AVID Education AE-36: The AE-36 is possibly the most popular headset that our customers use for WIDA testing. They can be used with any laptop or desktop, and are a great choice for Chromebooks. The AE-36 comes with a 6-foot cord, which ensures that students won’t accidentally pull the cord out, even if the audio jack is in the back of the device. The padded headband and earpieces on this design keep the headphones comfortable for long-term use.

While headsets with microphones are needed for WIDA testing, purchasing a large set for school-wide testing isn’t always feasible and can be cost prohibitive. Since WIDA only recommends having three to five students working on the speaking portion of the test at a time, an affordable solution is to purchase a smaller set of headsets and combine these with headphones that can be used for the listening portion of the test. A very popular style of headphone for WIDA is the AVID Education AE-35. Similar in style to the AE-36, the AE-35 is a lightweight style with an adjustable headband that fits most students’ heads. A comfortable style for long-term use, the AE-35 is a good choice for both computer and language labs as well as classroom and school-wide headphone sets. With bulk pricing available, these headphones are not only a reliable choice for schools but are also affordable.

WIDA testing has become an important tool for school districts, and having the right equipment puts students in the best position to succeed. As schools begin to plan for the next academic year and look for headset solutions, keep these WIDA recommendations in mind!

State Testing: What Headsets Will You Need?

Spring has arrived, and with it, the school standardized testing season. Throughout the country, students will soon be taking state tests. TELPAS, PARCC WCAP, SBAC and more. Educators and testing coordinators preparing for testing will need headsets for use with the test so that students can complete listening comprehension and speaking exercises. Many state tests have requirements for these headsets to make sure they will be compatible with the testing software, and schools will need to navigate these requirements to find a headset style that will work and fit their budget. In this post, we outline some of the headset requirements and spotlight three of the most popular styles for schools to purchase.

So, what are the headset requirements? Some testing requires headsets used must have a microphone for speaking exercises and must sit on the students’ ears and not in them (meaning that earbud styles are excluded). Using an over-the-ear headphone style instead of earbuds is also more comfortable for most students and allows them to fully focus on the test. Headsets must have a double earpiece (no single-ear styles), have stereo sound, and utilize a single, 3.5mm TRRS plug to connect into the computer. Styles with a single TRRS plug will simplify set-up, as teachers and students won’t need to deal with multiple plugs for earphones and microphones. Additional requirements are:

Driver unit size: 32mm

Frequency Response: 20 – 20,000 Hz

Impedance: 32 Ohms

Microphone Frequency Response: 100 – 12,000 Hz

Microphone Impedance: 3,320 Ohms

Using the right headsets for testing is essential so that student responses are clear and can be properly assessed.

Encore Data Products carries a wide range of headsets that fit these requirements. Here are three of the most popular styles used by our customers:

  • Soundnetic SN503: These headsets are one of the most affordable styles that our customers. The boom microphone is adjustable so each student can move it to the most comfortable position for them. The SN503 has a braided cord that helps prevent fraying, meaning these headsets can stand up to heavy use. Each one comes with a plastic storage bag, making it easy for students to store their headsets after testing.
  • AVID Education AE-55: The AE-55 was designed with the TELPAS test in mind. The ambidextrous design allows the microphone to rotate 270 degrees, so students can put these headsets on in either direction and the microphone will work. The cord comes with a Velcro tie that will keep cords from tangling with each other when the headsets are stored. The leatherette earpads are easy to clean and can be wiped down between uses.
  • ThinkWrite 90103: ThinkWrite headsets have a larger earpiece that is meant to fit over the student ’s entire ear. This guarantees comfort during applications requiring the student to wear the headset for a long period of time. Volume control on the cord of the 90103 allows students to adjust audio volume as needed. The microphone has a stiff plastic arm for maximum durability; it can also swivel up out of the way when not needed or when the headsets are stored. ThinkWrite headsets have a wide range of applications in addition to TELPAS, making them a good investment for computer and language labs.

With any of these headsets, students will not be hindered by unreliable or incorrect equipment. Instead, students will be able to focus entirely on their exam, enabling them to achieve their highest potential. As testing kicks off for some schools (and wraps up for others), we wish all students good luck on their exams this spring and in the fall!

5 Ways to Keep Your School Headphones Clean

These days, nearly all students will need headphones, headsets, or earbuds during their time in school to complete important parts of their education. Sets of school headphones often undergo heavy use: in a class setting, students may use an assigned pair of headphones for most of the year, while in a lab setting, hundreds of students may use the same pair of headphones each week. In these types of environments, how can educators keep headphones and headsets clean and sanitary for the next student to use, whether in the next week or the next year? Below, we outline some of the best techniques that teachers and educators can employ to keep their headphone sets in good working order and ready for use.

  1. Headphone cleaning spray. Cleaning spray is a good solution for dirt that has set into the plastic parts of headphones and headsets. Hamilton Buhl offers a headphone cleaning spray that is free of harsh chemicals, alcohol, and ammonia, and is specifically designed to leave headphones streak- and scratch-free. This non-toxic spray is safe to use in the classroom and is a great way to keep your school headphones, headsets, and earbuds looking like new. By using this spray, many teachers are able to refresh a class set of headphones or headsets for a new group of students to use or keep headphones from getting too dirty over the course of the school year.
  2. Leatherette or rubber earpads. Earpads constructed out of these materials are amazingly easy to clean. Leatherette and rubber earpads can be wiped down in between use with any standard cleaner, making the transition between one student and the next a breeze. Many educators prefer these earpads since they will not collect as much dirt as a foam earpad. Leatherette and rubber earpads are available on a wide range of headphones, from durable, lab-style headphones that will last the school year to disposable headphones perfect for school testing, guaranteeing that there is a pair that will fit your needs.
  3. Headphone covers. Headphone covers are disposable, sanitary, cloth coverings that slide on over a headphone’s earpieces and protect them from building up dirt, skin cells, and oils from repeated use. Often utilized in hospitals to maintain sanitary conditions, headphone covers are easy to put on and take off. Once one student is finished with their work, the covers can be removed and disposed of and a new pair attached so that the headphones are ready for the next student. Headphone covers are a great way to keep headphones in good working condition, as keeping dirt and grime out of the earpieces can also extend the life of earpieces that are not washable. There are even microphone covers for headsets!
  4. UV Sterilizer.  Here is an ideal solution for eradicating germs on your headphones and other surfaces in the classroom.   A safe and effective tool that offers 99.9% sterilization of all the “bad stuff” than can be found in the classroom.
  5. Disposable headphones or earbuds. In some situations, the most efficient way to keep headphones clean in between uses is to swap them for a new pair. This is especially effective in school testing environments or learning modules where headphones will only be used for a short period of time and then not needed again after a few weeks. Disposable school headphones and earbuds are available in a wide variety of styles, and save educators the time needed to clean and wipe down multiple pairs of headphones or switch out sanitary covers.

By following the above guidelines, you can keep your school headphones and earbuds clean and in good working condition, enabling students to get the most out of their learning time. If you have any questions about which hygiene solution would work best for your needs, our team at Encore is always ready to help! Feel free to get in touch with us, and we’ll be happy to work with you!

The Best Ways to Store Your School Headphones in the Classroom

Follow these tips and tricks to easily and safely store your school headphones.

Headphones, headsets, and earbuds have become standard and essential learning aids in the classroom. By enabling students to complete listening comprehension exercises, language fluency tests, and other audio applications, they help turn classroom learning into a dynamic experience. Many teachers and educators invest in a set of headphones for their classrooms; however, these can easily wear out if they are not stored correctly. Read on to discover the best way to store headphones to keep them out of the way when not in use and protect their lifespans.

  1. Use a headphones storage bag. Many classrooms assign a pair of headphones to each student to use throughout the year. To keep track of whose headphones are whose—and to prevent loose cords from tangling—a storage bag is a useful accessory. Most storage bags come with a panel for students to label with their name, so when headphones are put away it is easy for students to find their own pair the next time. Storage bags come in a few sizes to accommodate different sizes of headphones and are a very affordable choice for computer labs and classrooms.
  2. Use a headphones storage case.A number of popular school headphone brands provide durable storage cases for educators to look after their equipment. Califone and Hamilton Buhl each have examples of hard plastic cases designed to stand up to the rigors of the classroom, and these come in a few sizes to store anywhere from 12 to 30 headphones. These cases provide a way to pack up headphones when not in use and protect them from over-handling; the cases also keep headphone cords out of the way, thus minimizing the chances of cords getting tangled, frayed, or broken. Storage cases are a good choice for school headphones that are only used a few times a year, such as for standardized testing, and need to be kept safe and out of the way for daily activities. Storage cases also feature handles and can be easily carried from classroom to classroom.
  3. Use a headphone storage rack.Headphone storage racks are especially useful for computer labs, language labs, and other areas where headphones will often be in use. Some racks are designed to sit on a counter and hold about 6 to 12 headphones for classroom use, while the largest rack available can hold dozens of headphones and can be wheeled from room to room, making it perfect for mobile lab activities. Headphone racks are a great solution for headphones that are in use frequently: students can grab their headphones from the rack, use them, and then return them when they are finished. This keeps headphones in one area instead of spread throughout the classroom and can also be used to keep track of headphone pairs to make sure none go missing.
  4. Use a school earbud case. While most storage options center around headphones, there are also options available for students and classrooms that prefer to use earbuds. If you plan on stocking your classroom with earbuds and would like a way to store them, there are styles available that come with an individual storage case. Students can store these at their desk, or they can be kept in a classroom storage area. Earbud cases are made of hard plastic, so they easily protect the earbuds from damage. Some cases also provide a way to store cords by winding them inside the case. This prevents pulling or tangling of cords in storage and protects them from premature fraying or breaking, damage that is often not covered by warranty.

Whichever storage solution fits your needs, Encore Data Products can help! We offer all of the above storage solutions at competitive prices. If you are unsure which school headphones solution might be best, our customer service team will be happy to help with any questions you might have. Once you’ve solved your storage needs, you’ll be all set for a successful school year!

ON-EAR HEADPHONES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Using on-ear classroom headphones is an economical solution for schools and educational centers to meet the demands of 21st century education, technology and testing requirements. The ear cushions rest on the outer ear, making the headphone light, comfortable and less prone to overheating the ears.

The on-ear headphone style also allows the wearer the benefit from hearing the outside environment.

Over-ear headphones and headsets will block external sounds.

Most headphones in this category meet the PARCC and Common Core testing requirements.

As a quick rule of thumb, monaural headphones are ideal for listening to single source recordings such as content for language learning and development (ELL/ELD) activities, speech pathology, and lesson videos.

Stereo headphones are ideal for educational gaming, online learning, music appreciation classes and 21st century learning using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

It is important to know if the audio source is a mono or stereo player as well, since plugging a stereo headphone into a mono source will result in sound only coming from one of the two earcups.
