School Fundraising: Raise Money by Selling What Students Need

If you are a parent, teacher, or administrator, you know that fundraising is a vital part of keeping a school running. After all, many schools are operating on extreme budgets, with finite resources available for important things like new equipment, special programs and teachers, and updates to the infrastructure of the school building and grounds. By holding fundraisers, parent-teacher organizations, booster clubs, and other associations can help make money to pay for some of the much-needed items a school needs to stay successful and help children have a better learning experience. But what makes a school fundraiser a success? Here are some tips for holding a fundraiser that not only makes money but gives students the tools they need to achieve more.

Stick to the Philosophy
If your school has a unique philosophy or curriculum that sets it apart from other neighborhood schools, be sure to select a fundraiser that speaks to that specific set of guidelines or rules. For example, if your school has adopted a strict wellness policy that disallows candy, baked goods, or other less-than-healthy food items, it would not be wise to hold a bake sale or door-to-door candy bar fundraiser, as this does not properly depict the school’s values. Similarly, a school that is known for a particular subject or educational approach should choose a fundraiser that goes with that theme for maximum interest and effectiveness. For instance, a STEM school could probably make a lot of money holding a robotics and engineering fair, while a school prized for its athletic department could do very well with a benefit fun run or 5K. By keeping your student body’s interests in mind, your fundraiser could earn a significant amount of money for the school to help pay for much-needed staff and equipment.

Involve the Kids
Whether you are raising money for an elementary K-5 school or a high school, students love to be involved in fundraising opportunities. Just be sure to keep the ages and abilities of the students in mind when choosing which fundraisers you wish to hold. This will not only build the excitement needed to encourage more participation, which will in turn earn more money for the school, but also help the students feel as though they are directly responsible for the outcome of the fundraiser, and make them proud of their efforts when they see what the proceeds were able to purchase for their school.

Make it Practical
If your school fundraiser raises money by selling students something they actually need, everybody benefits. For example, by setting up a school store in which children can purchase school supplies like pencils, notebooks, and markers, you can encourage students to give back to their school by buying something they already needed for their classes. Additional practical fundraising opportunities, such as selling USB drives for the school technology lab or earbuds for use in the library, can help make money to be used for school-related purchases while giving students a chance to buy a necessary item without having to go to a store.

Holding a school fundraiser is a great way for the students, parents, teachers, and administrators to come together as a community and have some fun while making money. By using common sense, creativity, and ingenuity, you can dream up the perfect fundraiser to help your school pay for essentials that go a long way in helping enhance your children’s educational experience.
